Marking the 5th year of Doernbecher Freestyle Collection, a collaborative project between Nike and Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Oregon which honors special Doernbecher patients who overcame great medical challenges. Each honoree, with assistances from the Nike creative teams and head designer Mark Smith, gets to create his or hers sneaker that convey their expressions on their lives, experiences and goals.
First of the collection is the tropical theme design by 16 year old Tony Taylor Jr. Hailed from Grant High School at Portland, Oregon, Taylor was diagnosed with Nephrotic Syndrome, an aliment of the kidney, and subsequently overcame the disease with kidney transplant. Highly sought after Air Jordan 1 Retro by Taylor composed of an all-patent leather construction in gradient aqua marine color scheme, detailed with laser-etched palm tree silhouettes. Imprinted on the heel panel are numerals “15″ for Taylor’s age at the time, and “4407″, his new “birthday”. On the tongue, the is a customized graphic of caricature Mr. Booper, Tylor’s alter ego.
